5 Essential Steps for a Successful Facial Routine
An effective facial routine doesn’t rely on piling up products, but on a precise sequence of steps, carried out in the right order and with the right technique. It’s one of the very first skills we teach APFE students, right from the early facial care modules: each step has a specific role, and skipping one weakens the whole protocol.
The first step, often neglected at home, is make-up removal followed by deep cleansing. It clears the skin of make-up residue, pollution and sebum built up during the day, and prepares the ground for the treatments that follow. Next comes exfoliation, mechanical or enzymatic depending on skin type, which removes dead cells and restores radiance to the complexion without aggravating the epidermis.
The third essential step: a targeted mask, chosen according to the skin’s needs at that moment — hydrating, purifying or soothing. This is a step we teach students to systematically personalise based on the skin diagnosis, rather than applying the same treatment to every client. The fourth step, applying a suitable serum or cream, then nourishes and protects the skin barrier.
Finally, the fifth step — daily sun protection — is the one most often forgotten, even though it determines the skin’s health in the long run. At APFE, we emphasise this point from the dermo-cosmetology module onward: a successful routine is judged as much on the consistency of these five steps as on the quality of the products used.
